Planning and acquiring green space near the west gate of Oakland Cemetery and the MLK Marta station can provide a good focal point for local efforts to revitalize Memorial Avenue. Help promote the creation of a public square with open air cafes and shops, a flower market at the entrance to the cemetery, through access for bike paths, and the development of a a shopping area integrated with Marta, providing both office spaces and residencies.
Oakland Plaza - Structure Integrated with Marta Station
Rather than a bridge to Marta, pursue designs that are more European in style with shops and interior malls closely integrated with rail facilities.
Oakland Square - Public Square
Pursue designs that create a public space free of auto traffic surrounded by shops and restaurants. This square has the potential to be the visual centerpiece of the Grant Park section of Memorial Avenue.
Oakland Cemetery - Through Access for Bike Paths
In return for raising funds to improve the area west of Oakland Cemetery, Oakland Cemetery should restore the original gate to the Cabbagetown side for through bike and pedestrian traffic.
Name for Initiative
Oakland Square and Oakland Plaza are two proposed names for our efforts. Other suggestions are welcome.
