The Swings, originally from Minneapolis, joined our Grant Park neighborhood family in 2010 due to Jeff’s job at Northwest Airlines, now Delta. Michele stumbled upon Grant Park while looking for apartments. After renting for a few months, persistency and networking with all the realtors in the neighborhood paid off. Originally a two bedroom and one bath, the home had little repairs done to it since it was built in 1908. But Jeff and Michele saw the potential for the home and bought it.

Since they moved into the home, they have been doing renovations to bring the home back to a more historical, yet functional state. As you enter the home, the hallway had been cordoned off with a wall, which is now open to be more in line with the traditional cottage style. Much of the trim is original and the functional pocket doors also restored. Also in the hallway, there is an antique radio that belonged to Michele’s father when he was a child. There are 4 fireplaces in the home, most of which have original tile. Many of the original wooden turned corner guards exist. Wooden corner guards we generally used in the 1910/20s to decoratively protect the plaster walls at the edges. In current homes, either steel or aluminum is now used.

The bathroom at the end of the hall was originally much larger but less functional. When the Swings designed the renovation for an addition to the back, they wanted a larger kitchen so they took 2 feet from the bathroom but still maintained a full bath. To the right, you will enter the new upgraded kitchen, which includes a pot filler over the stove. Michele uses this almost daily during cooking! Michele and Jeff love to entertain, and they designed a space exactly for that, including two taps that Jeff always has ready to pour. The family room in the back is the new addition, along with the master suite and the stairs to the basement. The basement was actually dug out from under the house during the renovation to provide the kids with a play area and also for Stella’s bedroom.
The Swings welcome all tour goers to their home and hope you have a wonderful adventure.
