THE CRIMEBUSTER
A Quarterly Newsletter from the
GRANT PARK SECURITY PATROL

December, 2011

IF YOU PAY QUARTERLY, IT’S TIME TO PAY YOUR DUES.  Please send $40 by January 1st for the 1st quarter, January - March.   If you pay annually ($160), GPSP will let you know when your membership needs to be renewed.   Thanks!![1]

WE’RE BE IN ZONE 6 NOW:

As of 3AM on Tuesday December 13th, the Atlanta Police Department changed the boundaries for its patrol zones.  Most notable for us, Grant Park will now be part of Zone 6 instead of Zone 3.  While the Zone 3 precinct will remain at the south end of Grant Park, officers responding to crime reports in Grant Park will be dispatched from the Zone 6 precinct in Kirkwood.  Our new Zone Commander is Major John Dalton.  You can go to http://boundaries.atlantapd.org/ to see the “beat view” of the new zones.  Our security patrol officers have noticed Zone 6 officers riding around the neighborhood for the past 2 months, so hopefully they’ve prepared themselves for covering/protecting previously unfamiliar territory.  The switch will make our security patrol officers, who have decades of experience with our area, even more valuable.  Also, our security patrol officers will be able to switch to the Zone 3 channel so that if there is a serious problem, they can request some back up from Zone 3, whose officers might be closer to the problem.

GPSP NEWS:

Our Annual Meeting will be held Saturday, March 17, 2012.  This is the meeting when our corporate officers are elected and members have an opportunity to meet each other and talk with some of the patrol officers.  We have a critical need for members who value the security patrol to step up and get involved as corporate officers, or commit to be Secretary-elect, Treasurer-elect or President-elect.  Our current President for the past 2 years had agreed to the post in name only (we are required to have 3 corporate officers to maintain our charter with the state).  While the work of the corporate officers is not overwhelming, when all the work is spread over 2 rather than 3 people, it soon taxes even the most dedicated.  Most of the current corporate officers have been serving in their positions for many years (decades) and would welcome the opportunity to hand over their jobs to a new generation of volunteers, or at least get a third person on board to share the load.   In previous newsletters we high-lighted the job of President and Secretary; this quarter we look at the role of the Treasurer.

The Treasurer is responsible for collecting the dues paid online from GPNA treasurer and the mailed-in dues from the post office box and depositing them in our bank account; making payments to patrol officers and preparing their annual1099 statements for the IRS; projecting needed changes in patrol schedules based on crime rates, membership levels and cash flow; producing an annual report for our CPA to prepare the IRS filing and for the annual meeting; and filing the annual corporate registration with the state.
If you are looking for a volunteer role that will make a real difference in the neighborhood, consider becoming the next Treasurer of GPSP.  Or if you just have some good ideas for improving GPSP and some time to help implement them, please contact GPSP at grantparksecurity@mindspring.com.   More detailed job descriptions for all the corporate officer positions are available.

CRIME NEWS:

While there were two car break-ins in the first week of December, it has, otherwise, been relatively quiet in the neighborhood.  Please remember to leave nothing in sight in your car, locking packages in your trunk when shopping.  Also be very aware of your surroundings and don’t get distracted with cell phone conversations when you’re out shopping or walking.   Keep this a happy and safe holiday.

Please report allincidents and all suspicious activity to 911.
Remember to notify GPSP if you are going away on vacation, with your dates and details about authorized visitors, whether pets are in the house, whether your vehicle/s are being left outside and any other helpful information.  Also, take the usual precautions of canceling newspapers, leaving lights on timers and asking your immediate neighbors to keep an eye on your property.

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT YOUR MEMBERSHIP DUES GO DIRECTLY INTO PATROL HOURS!   PLEASE SEND IN YOUR DUES PROMPTLY AND ENCOURAGE YOUR FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS TO JOIN TOO.   MORE MEMBERS = MORE POLICE PRESENCE!

CORPORATE PARTNERS:
Thanks to AdamsRealtors, Botwinick and Botwinick, CPAs and APCO Graphics Inc. for sponsoring some additional patrol hours!
