The National Center for the Prevention of Home Improvement Fraud

Everyone has either been a victim of contractor fraud, or knows someone who has.  Homeowners have many places to go after they are taken advantage of by home improvement/home repair contractors (i.e., the Better Business Bureau, Governor’s Office of Consumer Affairs, etc.)  Yet, at this point, the fraudster has already taken off with the homeowner’s money or performed shoddy construction on their most prized possession, their home.
The National Center for the Prevention of Home Improvement Fraud (NCPHIF) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization created to educate homeowners before they are taken advantage of.
Our mission is to be the clearinghouse for homeowners to go to when they anticipate a home improvement/home repair project.  We will provide critical information before they begin a project, while the project is being performed, and after the project is completed.  NCPHIF will be the “go to” entity to provide practical information that facilitates a homeowner’s understanding of practical steps to take to prevent contractor fraud.  With this knowledge, consumers can proactively avoid being victimized by illegal contracts, upfront deposits and payments, shoddy construction, and potential liens on the property they have worked so hard to acquire.
NCPHIF was founded by Phae Howard, after she witnessed firsthand, the devastating impact of her own Grandmother being financially and emotionally victimized by an unscrupulous contractor.  “I don’t know how much money she lost, but I absolutely remember the pain in her face.  That will be with me always,” she says.  Phae has made it her personal goal, and the mission of NCPHIF, to empower consumers to avoid similar situations.
